It was 1990 when Chaweng had a handful bamboo bars, a handful guesthouses and a couple backpackers coming first. Once around the year 2000 they built the Green Mango and a couple more hookers came down then, but what happened afterwards was THE Impact of mass tourism as nowhere else it happened in the wolrd when Ko Samui got world famous. And the day, McDonalds jerks are building their uglyness, it is time to stay away for others than jerks and housewifes travelling in the meantime to Thailand as it was Mallorca.
After this Impact of Gucci and other luxury Shops and a ugly City behind the beach it rather is heavy annoying staying in Ko Samui. It was not just here where the Thais destroyed anything what once was exisiting in a charming way. Once you did not recognize Patong in Phuket anymore as it got a City as Pattaya and almost same happened here in Patong beach.
Now it is a Billion Dollar Business where those once came stayed away then and went to Cambodia, but it did not last Long and the Chinese mega machines arrived there just 10 years later to build their skyscrapers on beaches. You can not stop human stupidity and once the Virus with Money starts it will destroy everything. You see it best here in Chaweng what happened when Money arrives and Mafias get installed.
But once, Chaweng was the perfect place. There are not many places where it was as here. Most sites in the world are eighter heavy boring or heavy overcrowed or heavy ugly or heavy destroyed by modern stupid architects. but Chaweng once was THE perfect place in the world as just a handful over the whole planet...and they all got destroyed, not just Chaweng. But when a place is once again perfect on this planet, there will be People which do anything not to let it be seen by tourists an they will try to prevent it is getting somewhere onto a web Portal to Keep at the least the very few places on earth alive and protected from damage as it happened with this nightmare here.
Fortunately the Chinese have no world in the Thai world what at least lets the beach still Kind of looking the same as before, otherwise those Chinese or American guys would pave the whole beach and build their Hawaiian, Miami and Shanghai style skyscrapers here as well. That way the whole Thing got still sort of a vibe, even most will be happy to leave it after a week and ancient backpackers will run away after a single hour here and get to a real island.
